The Make-Up, a post-punk band, reigning from D.C. consists of
Ian Svenonius- Vocals
James Canty-Guitar/Organ
Steve Gamboa-Drums
Michelle Mae- Bass
Ian's cool voice projects added weight onto the sound and has one wondering whether the
arm and that player can take it. Candy and Gamboa are obviously no stranger to
allowing melody and time to seem as one- or seem as they should be. Mae, one of
my personal favorites (she was in the all girl band The Frumpies in 92- BEFORE
The Donnas)... well Mae is that one girl anyone and everyone wants to but can't
sleep with. Founded on the music mantra and liberation theology of
"Gospel Yeh-Yeh", they evoke a garage soul rock sound that few are able to
come close to. Throughout the record, Ian's cool melodies reject any form of
duplication or regurgitation, for The Make-Up, make up a new kind of musical experience.
Said to have been recorded live (though it is apparent that "Live" is a subjective term- for it was recorded in a studio) this first full length
album from the band, ranks up there in my personal favorites. They are sultry and reminiscent of a drunk homeless man finding a
piece of caramel, after rummaging through the city sewers. In other words, when there is only the darkness, and not the beauty one may find within darkness, but the terrifying unavoidable kind of
darkness, there is only one destination- Destination Love.
Svenonius, Mae, and the groups last added edition towards the end of their run in early 2000, Minoff are now in the band Weird War. Listen here: http://www.myspace.com/weirdwarworld
